Weathering Tough Times? Resources are available.

With 95% of Nebraska experiencing a shortage of annual rainfall and 75% of Nebraska suffering with a severe drought, there will be families in Nebraska that will be dealing with tough times. As part of a multi-state rural response training, a list of resources for families has been compiled. Some of these resources include:
Direct Farm Services:

Nebraska Department of Agriculture: 800-831-0550
Website: http://www.agr.state.ne.us

Drought information:
Website: http://www.droughtcentral.org

Farm Legal and Financial Clinics: 800-464-0258

Free clinics provide farmers and ranchers an opportunity to meet privately with experienced agricultural debt financial counselors, farm law attorneys, and mediators to explore the options that best fit their individual needs.

Nebraska Farm Mediation Service: 800-446-4071

Farm mediation provides a means for agricultural producers to sort through disputes with creditors or the USDA agencies with the aid of a neutral third party called a mediator. The mediator does not decide the issues for the parties but encourages them to reach mutually agreeable solutions. Farm borrowers who apply for mediation are offered no-cost financial counseling and analysis. Farm mediation can be used as a proactive approach to resolve issues while the borrower and lenders still have multiple options, as well as in situations where the lender is threatening foreclosure and the borrower is contemplating bankruptcy. For more information contact: Marion Beethe at marianjb@agr.state.us

Nebraska Rural Response Hotline: 800-464-0258

Through the hotline callers can access free mental health counseling , legal advice, financial management clinics, and mediation services. Outreach workers area also available to visit with farm and ranch families.
